Australian Buyer's Guide (2026)

The Best AI Chatbots for Australian Small Business (2026)

6 chatbot providers compared on the things that actually decide the choice: what you are really buying (a tool or a service), real published pricing, what currency it is in, where your data lives and who each one suits. Written by Loudachris, an AI automation agency that also builds AI chatbots, so we keep ourselves out of the comparison and label our own option clearly.

Who wrote this, and why it is fair

Full disclosure: this guide is written by Loudachris, an Australian AI automation agency that also builds and manages AI chatbots. Grading ourselves first would not be a comparison, so the table and the provider write-ups below cover third-party providers only. Our own done-for-you option is described in its own clearly labelled section, as one choice among many, not a winner.

Direct answer

There is no single best AI chatbot, because these 6 products are 2 different things sold under 1 name. Tidio, Chatbase, Crisp and Intercom are self-serve software: cheaper to start, priced in USD, and you do the configuring and the maintaining. DIGITALON AI and ChatBot.net.au are done-for-you services: someone else builds and maintains the bot, both are Australian-based, and they are priced accordingly. Pick Tidio for the cheapest fast start, Chatbase for answers drawn from documents you already have, Crisp if several staff answer enquiries, Intercom if you run a real support function, DIGITALON if your data has to stay onshore, and ChatBot.net.au for a flat managed fee. Then read the section on tools versus services before you compare a single price.

Key takeaways

  • There is no universal number 1. Each provider below is genuinely the better fit for a different kind of business, which is why we compare rather than crown.
  • The real split is tool versus service. 4 of the 6 are software you configure yourself. 2 are Australian done-for-you services where someone builds and maintains it. Comparing their prices head to head will mislead you.
  • 4 of the 6 publish in USD (Tidio, Chatbase, Crisp, Intercom). We have left those figures in USD rather than printing an AUD conversion that goes stale, because the amount on your card depends on the rate on the day plus international fees.
  • Only 1 provider we reviewed (DIGITALON AI) states that your data stays in Australian data centres. ChatBot.net.au is Australian-owned with Australian support but makes no residency claim. The other 4 do not state residency at all.
  • Intercom seat pricing could not be captured. The per-seat figures did not render as readable numbers when we checked, so we have recorded them as not published rather than guessing a number for you.
  • If you would rather not configure a tool at all, a done-for-you build and management engagement with Loudachris (our own service) is $2,000 to $5,000 to set up, then $300 to $800 per month.

Read this before you compare prices

You are choosing between 2 products, not 6.

Every buyer's guide on this topic lines up 6 logos and sorts them by price. That is the mistake. 4 of these are self-serve software and 2 are done-for-you services, and putting a $24.17 USD a month subscription next to a $99 a month managed service makes the subscription look like a bargain when it is not the same purchase. One of them includes a person doing the work. The other one includes you doing the work.

Self-serve software

Tidio, Chatbase, Crisp, Intercom

  • Cheapest entry point, and 3 of the 4 have a genuine free tier.
  • You write the answers, wire the integrations and test the edge cases.
  • You keep it accurate as your prices and services change.
  • Priced in USD, so your real cost moves with the exchange rate.
  • Live on your site quickly if your content is already in good shape.

Done-for-you services

DIGITALON AI, ChatBot.net.au (and Loudachris, disclosed below)

  • Higher monthly cost, because the fee includes someone doing the work.
  • They build it, train it on your business and maintain it after launch.
  • Australian-based, which usually means support in your time zone.
  • The only onshore data residency claim in this guide sits in this group.
  • The right choice if nobody on your team will own the bot in 3 months.

Decide which of those 2 you are buying first. Then, and only then, compare prices inside that group.

How we compared

We looked at each provider on 5 things that decide most Australian chatbot choices: what you are actually buying, what the product does, the pricing model and the currency it is quoted in, integrations, and who it suits. Everything here was drawn from each provider's own live site.

  • Facts are taken from each provider's current website, checked on 18 July 2026. We quote pricing exactly as displayed.
  • USD prices stay in USD. We have not converted them to AUD, because a hardcoded conversion goes stale and hides the international card fee. Convert at the rate on the day you buy.
  • Where a site published no rates, we record pricing as on enquiry rather than guessing a number. Where a figure would not render (Intercom seat pricing), we say so instead of estimating.
  • Where a provider makes no Australian claim, we show that as not stated. Undocumented is not the same as offshore, so we do not assume either way.
  • We have left out vendor performance claims (lead-lift percentages, deflection rates, resolution rates). Those come from vendors' own marketing and case studies, not independent testing, so they are not a fair basis for comparison.
  • Loudachris is not in the comparison. We build AI chatbots ourselves, so including our own service alongside the others would not be honest. It sits in its own section further down.

Each provider, in detail.

What it does, the Australian angle, real published pricing, integrations and who it suits.

Chatbase

chatbase.co
What it does
A purpose-built AI agent platform. You upload your website, documents and files, it trains a chatbot on them, and you embed it. More AI-first and less live-chat-first than the helpdesk products in this list.
Australian angle
Not stated. No Australian entity, Australian hosting or Australian support is claimed on the pricing page, and prices are listed in USD.
Public pricing
Public, in USD. Free at $0 (50 message credits a month, 1 agent), Hobby at $32 a month (500 credits), Standard at $120 a month (4,000 credits, plus helpdesk, voice, telephony and API), Pro at $400 a month (15,000 credits), and custom Enterprise. Annual billing is around 20% off. Because billing is in credits rather than conversations, model your own volume before you pick a tier.
Integrations and notable features
Trains directly on your site content, documents and files. Choice of multiple underlying AI models, voice and telephony from Standard up, API access, auto-retraining of agents, and integrations including Stripe, Zendesk and Salesforce.
Best for
Businesses whose main need is accurate answers from a body of existing content (FAQs, policies, product documentation) rather than a staffed live-chat team.

ChatBot.net.au

chatbot.net.au
What it does
An Australian fully-managed website chatbot service. They build, install and maintain the bot on your existing site for a fixed monthly fee rather than usage-based tiers.
Australian angle
Stated. The site describes itself as proudly Australian-owned, lists a Sydney address (242 Elizabeth St, Sydney NSW 2010) and advertises an Australian support team. It does not make a data residency or onshore hosting claim, unlike DIGITALON. The site also carries a self-asserted number 1 claim, which is the vendor's own marketing rather than an independent ranking, so we have not treated it as a verified fact.
Public pricing
Published as $99 a month plus a $299 one-off setup fee, or $1,188 a year annually with the setup fee waived. No lock-in contract, cancel anytime, and a 30-day results guarantee. Worth checking before you sign: the page does not explicitly label the currency as AUD, and the /pricing URL returned a 404 when we looked, so confirm the currency and the current rate directly with them.
Integrations and notable features
Works with WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and custom HTML. Lead capture with CRM sync, human handover for complex queries, optional multilingual, and a stated go-live of 5 to 7 days.
Best for
Australian small businesses that want a flat, predictable monthly cost and zero setup work, and that do not need deep customisation or onshore data guarantees.

Crisp

crisp.chat
What it does
An omnichannel customer messaging suite: website chat widget, shared email inbox, knowledge base and ticketing, plus an AI chatbot billed from a credit pool.
Australian angle
Not stated on the pricing page. No Australian data residency or Australian support commitment was found, and prices are listed in USD.
Public pricing
Public, in USD, and priced per workspace rather than per seat. Free at $0 (2 seats, no AI credits), Mini at $45 a month (4 seats, $5 of AI credits, roughly 90 automated conversations), Essentials at $95 a month (10 seats, $25 of AI credits, roughly 450 conversations), Plus at $295 a month (20+ seats, $75 of AI credits, roughly 1,350 conversations), and custom Enterprise. There is a 14-day free trial.
Integrations and notable features
Omnichannel inbox with knowledge base and ticketing, a workflow automation builder with routing rules, an AI credit pool with a stated conversations-per-dollar estimate, and white labelling available on Plus.
Best for
Small teams with several people answering enquiries, where per-seat pricing elsewhere would climb quickly. The per-workspace model is the real differentiator here.

DIGITALON AI

digitalon.ai
What it does
Australian done-for-you custom chatbot builds trained on the client's own business data, plus adjacent services (AI receptionist, AI agents, workflow automation). An agency-style engagement rather than self-serve software.
Australian angle
The strongest and most specific Australian claim in this set. The site states that data is stored exclusively in Australian data centres with primary facilities in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra, that all AI software and data remain within the Australian cloud, that support is 100% Australian-based with the team entirely in Australia, and it publishes an ABN and a Sunshine Coast location.
Public pricing
Not published. The site names 3 tiers (BASIC up to 300 chats a month, STANDARD up to 1,000 chats a month, ENTERPRISE unlimited) but each says contact for pricing. The only published figure is overage at $1 per chat above the plan limit, and the currency is not explicitly labelled on that page. Treat this as quote on enquiry.
Integrations and notable features
Custom training on your own business data, CRM, booking and email automation integration, real-time handover from bot to a human, multi-language support, downloadable chat history and analytics, and deployment to Shopify, WordPress and custom sites.
Best for
Australian businesses that want someone else to build, train and maintain the bot, and that have a hard requirement for data to stay onshore.

Intercom

intercom.com
What it does
An enterprise-grade customer service platform built around Fin, its AI agent, with a messenger, help centre, ticketing and reporting. The heavyweight option in this list.
Australian angle
Not stated. No Australian data residency or Australian support commitment was found on the pricing page, and prices are listed in USD.
Public pricing
Partly public, and this is the 1 gap we could not close honestly. Fin, the AI agent, is publicly priced at $0.99 USD per outcome (per resolution) with a minimum monthly commitment, and it can run standalone on top of an existing helpdesk. Published add-ons include Pro at $99 a month, Copilot at $29 per agent per month billed annually, and Proactive Support Plus at $99 a month. The per-seat prices for Essential, Advanced and Expert did not render as readable figures when we fetched the page, so we record seat cost as not published rather than guessing it. Read those off the live pricing page before you budget.
Integrations and notable features
Multiple team inboxes, workflow automation and round robin routing from Advanced up, SSO, HIPAA support and SLAs on Expert, a 14-day free trial with no card, and an Early Stage program discount for startups of up to 93%.
Best for
Businesses already running a real support function that want measurable deflection and can justify seat costs plus per-outcome AI charges. Heavier than a 2-person trades business needs.

Tidio

tidio.com
What it does
Website live chat with a shared inbox and helpdesk ticketing, plus a bolt-on generative AI agent (Lyro) that answers customer questions from your own content. Sold as self-serve software you install on your site yourself.
Australian angle
Not stated. No Australian office, Australian data residency or Australian support hours are claimed on the site. Pricing is in USD, so Australian buyers also carry currency conversion and international card fees.
Public pricing
Public, in USD. Free at $0 (50 billable conversations), Starter at $24.17 a month (100 conversations), Growth at $49.17 a month (from 250 conversations), Plus at $300 a month plus usage, and custom Premium. The AI part is an add-on: the Lyro AI agent starts at $32.50 a month (50 conversations) and Flows at $24.17 a month (2,000 visitors). Annual billing gives 2 months free. Budget the base plan and the AI add-on together, not separately.
Integrations and notable features
Lyro answers from your own knowledge base with human handover, live chat plus shared inbox and ticketing in 1 console, a Flows visual builder for rule-based journeys, desktop and mobile apps, multilanguage support, and analytics (basic on Starter, advanced from Growth).
Best for
Small businesses that want a cheap, self-serve chat widget live quickly and are comfortable configuring it themselves. A reasonable entry point for ecommerce and simple service sites.

How to choose, in 7 questions.

Work through these before you open a single pricing page.

1

Are you buying a tool or a service?

This is the fork that decides everything else. A tool is cheaper on paper and the work lands on you. A service costs more per month and the work lands on someone else. Answer this before you look at a single price.

2

What currency is the price in?

4 of the 6 providers here publish in USD. That is not a criticism of them, it is a budgeting fact for you: the figure on your statement is the converted amount plus any international card fee, and it moves with the exchange rate.

3

What exactly gets metered?

The unit is different at almost every vendor. Tidio meters conversations, Chatbase meters message credits, Crisp meters a dollar-denominated AI credit pool, Intercom meters resolved outcomes, and DIGITALON meters chats with $1 overage. Convert them all to your own monthly volume before comparing.

4

Where does your data live?

Only DIGITALON AI states onshore Australian storage. The rest either do not say, or say nothing about residency at all. Not stated is not the same as offshore, but if you handle health, legal or government-adjacent information, you need the answer in writing rather than an assumption.

5

How does the bot know the answers?

Some products train on your existing website, documents and files. Others start from rule-based flows you build by hand. Trained-on-your-content is faster to launch if your content is already good, and worse than useless if your website contradicts itself.

6

What happens when it cannot answer?

Every provider in this list offers some form of human handover. Check what triggers it, where the conversation lands (email, inbox, SMS), and how fast someone actually sees it. A bot that politely dead-ends a ready-to-buy customer is worse than no bot.

7

Who owns it 3 months after launch?

The quiet failure mode is not a bad bot, it is an abandoned one: prices change, services change, and nobody updates the answers. Name the person who owns it. If that person does not exist, buy a managed service instead of a subscription.

The done-for-you alternative (our own service)

If you would rather it was built, trained and managed for you.

This one is ours, and we have kept it out of the comparison above on purpose. Loudachris sits in the same category as the 2 Australian done-for-you services listed earlier: instead of a subscription you configure, we build the chatbot, train it on your real business content, wire it into your systems and keep it accurate afterwards.

In practice that means writing the answers with you rather than pointing a model at a website and hoping, connecting it to your booking system or CRM (for example ServiceM8, Cliniko or HubSpot), setting the handover rules so a hot enquiry reaches a human fast, and updating it when your services and prices change. It is a service, not a self-serve tool, and we are the author of this guide, so read this as our own offer rather than a neutral pick.

What it costs

$2,000 to $5,000

once-off to build, train and integrate

$300 to $800

per month to run and manage

Who it suits

Businesses that want the outcome without configuring a platform, or that need the chatbot wired into existing systems and kept accurate. If you are happy to set up and maintain a tool yourself, one of the self-serve providers above will cost you less. If you want it done for you and kept running, that is what we do.

Where to start, by what you value most.

If you value: The lowest published entry price

Start with: Tidio: a free tier, then Starter at $24.17 USD a month. Add the Lyro AI agent from $32.50 USD a month if you want the AI part.

If you value: Accurate answers pulled from documents you already have

Start with: Chatbase: trains directly on your site content, documents and files, with a choice of underlying models.

If you value: Several staff answering enquiries without per-seat costs

Start with: Crisp: priced per workspace with seats included, rather than per seat.

If you value: Measurable deflection inside a real support team

Start with: Intercom: Fin is billed at $0.99 USD per resolution, so you are paying for outcomes rather than seats alone.

If you value: Data that provably stays in Australia

Start with: DIGITALON AI: the only provider here that states storage in named Australian data centres with Australian-based support.

If you value: A flat monthly fee and nothing to configure

Start with: ChatBot.net.au: they build, install and maintain it, at $99 a month as listed plus a $299 setup fee.

If you value: The bot built around your systems and managed for you

Start with: A done-for-you provider. That includes the 2 Australian services above, and Loudachris (our own service, described below and disclosed as ours), rather than a self-serve subscription.

3 things to verify before you sign

  • Currency and GST. 4 of the 6 providers here publish in USD, and 1 of the Australian options does not label its currency on the page at all. Confirm what actually gets charged to your card, including any international transaction fee.
  • What counts as a billable unit. Conversations, message credits, AI credits, resolutions and chats are all different meters. Take your own monthly enquiry volume and run it through each vendor's unit before you compare tiers.
  • Where your data lives, in writing. Only 1 provider we reviewed states Australian data residency. If you handle health, legal or government-adjacent information, ask each vendor directly and keep the answer on file.

What we left out, and why

  • ManyChat. It is primarily an Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp messaging automation tool rather than a website chatbot, so it is a different category to the 6 above. Social messaging also sits outside what Loudachris does, so we are not the right people to assess it.
  • Several other Australian chatbot providers surfaced while researching this guide. We did not verify them individually against their own live sites, so we have not listed them. Appearing in a search result is not the same as being checked, and we would rather have a shorter list we can stand behind.
  • Vendor performance statistics. Lead-lift percentages, deflection rates and resolution rates published by vendors come from their own marketing and case studies. They may well be accurate for those clients, but they are not independent, so they are not a fair basis for ranking anyone.

AI chatbot questions Australian owners ask.

What is the best AI chatbot for Australian small business?
There is no single best AI chatbot for Australian small business, because the 6 providers in this guide are 2 different products sold under 1 name. Tidio, Chatbase, Crisp and Intercom are self-serve software: cheaper to start, priced in USD, and you do the configuration and the maintenance. DIGITALON AI and ChatBot.net.au are done-for-you services: someone else builds and maintains the bot, both are Australian-based, and they are priced accordingly. Comparing a $24.17 USD a month tool against a $99 a month managed service on price alone is comparing a tool against a service. Decide which of those 2 you are buying first, then choose inside that group. Loudachris, the author of this guide, also builds AI chatbots, which we describe in a separate section rather than ranking ourselves.
How much does an AI chatbot cost in Australia?
Published entry prices run from free tiers (Tidio, Chatbase and Crisp all have one) through Tidio Starter at $24.17 USD a month, Chatbase Hobby at $32 USD a month, Crisp Mini at $45 USD a month, and ChatBot.net.au at $99 a month as listed plus a $299 one-off setup fee. Intercom publishes its Fin AI agent at $0.99 USD per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment. DIGITALON AI quotes on enquiry. Remember that every USD figure costs more in AUD once the exchange rate and international card fees are applied. A done-for-you build and management engagement with Loudachris is $2,000 to $5,000 to set up, then $300 to $800 per month to run and manage.
Are AI chatbot prices in AUD or USD?
Mostly USD. Tidio, Chatbase, Crisp and Intercom all publish in USD, so the amount that lands on an Australian card is the converted figure plus any international transaction fee, and it moves with the exchange rate. DIGITALON AI publishes no dollar figures at all beyond $1 per chat over the plan limit. ChatBot.net.au publishes $99 a month but does not explicitly label the currency as AUD on the page we checked. Confirm the currency and the GST treatment on the provider's own pricing page before you buy, because a plan that looks like $50 can land closer to $80 on your statement.
Which AI chatbot keeps your data in Australia?
Of the providers we reviewed, only DIGITALON AI makes an explicit onshore claim: data stored exclusively in Australian data centres with primary facilities in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra, AI software and data kept within the Australian cloud, and support based entirely in Australia. ChatBot.net.au is Australian-owned with a Sydney address and an Australian support team, but makes no data residency claim. Tidio, Chatbase, Crisp and Intercom do not state Australian residency on the pages we checked, so treat that as not stated rather than assuming either way. If you handle health, legal or government-adjacent data, ask each vendor directly and get the answer in writing.
Should I set up the chatbot myself or have it built for me?
Set it up yourself if the questions you get are simple, your content is already tidy, and someone on your team will own the bot after launch. A self-serve tool can be live on your site the same week for the price of a subscription. Have it built for you if the bot needs to be wired into your booking system or CRM, if the answers have to be right the first time, or if nobody is realistically going to maintain it. The honest test is not the monthly fee, it is who does the work: writing the answers, testing the edge cases, and fixing the bot when it gets something wrong 3 months from now.
What about ManyChat?
ManyChat is deliberately not in this comparison. It is primarily an Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp messaging automation tool rather than a website chatbot, so it is a different category to the 6 providers above. Social messaging also sits outside what Loudachris does, so we are not the right people to assess it. If your priority is automating Instagram or Facebook DMs rather than answering questions on your website, look at it on its own terms rather than against this list.
Is Loudachris one of the compared providers in this guide?
No. This guide is written by Loudachris, which also builds AI chatbots, so we deliberately kept ourselves out of the provider comparison to keep it honest. Our own done-for-you option is described in its own clearly labelled section as one choice among many, not a ranked pick and not a number 1.
